Graduating from the University is an important milestone in the life of a student that marks the beginning of a new chapter. As much as getting that bachelor’s degree marks the end of a long academic journey, it also introduces a host of challenges that could be problematic for the individuals who are unprepared for life after university. Life after graduation comes with its share of problems such as navigating the job market, building and managing finances, creating a whole new network of friends, etc, these problems or challenges need to be handled using strategic planning and taking proactive measures.
Navigating the Job Market
Students in the university usually have a simple plan for life after graduation which goes like this “Graduate, get a job immediately, etc” which they come to find out, is not so straightforward. The job market is very unpredictable and competitive especially for recent graduates and worse if there’s a high percentage of unemployment. A lot of graduates spend months and years before securing jobs and more times, it’s not the jobs they want but what is available. To stand out in navigating the job market, it is important to do the following;
- Network Effectively: Because of the digital revolution, it is easier to network and reach people from every country and every sphere of life. Social media has provided that avenue – leverage on it. LinkedIn is a trendy outlet to connect with industry professionals; however, it is not the only one. Every social media networking app can be a tool to connect with industry professionals and find opportunities if you know your way around it. Career workshops, webinars, and career fairs are other ways to expand your circle. As a new graduate, you just exhaust every outlet and opportunity available when navigating the job market.
- Tailor Your Resume: Some of us have that one cup at home that we use for everything; wine, water, tea –a multipurpose cup, which is wrong. You cannot use the same resume for every job that you are applying to; you’d end up not getting called for interviews and blaming your “village people” as we jokingly say in Nigeria. You have to tailor your resume to match the job descriptions for vacancies or openings that you qualify for.
- Stay Informed: Information is key. Keep abreast of industry trends and required skills. Continuous learning through online courses can give you an edge.
Financial Management
One thing you need to learn is financial management. Whether you are looking for a job or already employed you need to be financially responsible and prudent. The world is going through a tough time and as such, a lot of people are one check away from being jobless. One reality check of graduating from University is the realisation that you have to start fending for yourself in some areas and therefore need to know how to manage finances. To achieve financial stability:
- Budget Wisely: Create a budget that accounts for all your expenses and savings goals. Use financial management apps to track your spending.
- Avoid taking loans: If you can, totally avoid taking loans at this stage of your life. If you cannot, one thing you must never do is take a loan to settle debts or for expenditures. Loans can be taken if you have a business that you want to invest in that will give you an ROI.
- Build an Emergency Fund: as you start earning a living, it’s best to save because emergencies will come and you need an outlet to take from when they arise. The last thing you want is to be financially stranded. Start small and gradually build consistency.
Mental Health and Well-being
There is a lot of mental stress and strain that comes with transitioning from a student to adult life. One thing you have to understand is the phase you are going through is very normal as many before you have. However, its very crucial to do the following;
- Seek Support: Always seek support and help from friends, professionals, and support groups if you are feeling overwhelmed, confused, or distraught.
- Maintain Work-Life Balance: There are two sides; work and personal life – it is important to balance them out and ensure that one is not encroaching on the other. Most times, work encroaches into personal life and sometimes we allow it, but it is important to have control and know when to “put down your laptop”
- Stay Active: If you do not have one, get a hobby. Whatever it is, ensure it is something you enjoy doing and make it routine.
- Take a break: The transition from school to adult life can be draining. If you can afford it, take a break before looking for jobs. It’s okay to take some time off to recharge and refuel for the new phase that awaits you.
Post-graduation challenges are a real and natural part of the transition into the workforce. By approaching these challenges with a strategic mindset and utilising available resources, graduates can navigate this period with confidence and success. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth and learning.
